What We Love Right Now November 24, 2010: Wish Lists

    November 24, 2010 by admin

With the holidays drawing near, it is time to join in the hustle and bustle and begin shopping for others. This can be a daunting task, giftsespecially if you’re shopping for the person who has everything. What we love right now are wish lists. They can really be so helpful when others are trying to shop for you or when you are trying to shop for others. If you haven’t created a wish list before, it is very similar to a registry you would create for your wedding or new baby. Many stores such as Toys R Us, Target, and Pottery Barn allow you to create wish lists for Christmas, Birthdays, and Hanukkah. Your loved ones can then shop the list you’ve created for yourself or your children. Now, you might be wondering what to do if you have several things you would like to put on a list from different retailers. Have no fear. We love the site This site allows you to put items from several sites on to one list. What better way to help your clueless husband and keep your kids from getting duplicate items from grandma and grandpa? We love wish lists!

What We Love Right Now November 17, 2010: Stress Less: Tips for a Terrific Thanksgiving

    November 17, 2010 by admin
Filed under Girl Talk, Meals In Minutes, Party Planning

Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays of the year, but it seems it is a lot of work and preparation and in the blink of an eye the food is eaten and guests are on their way out the door and you are left with a mess to clean up and lots of leftovers. This day, whether you host a big gathering or spend a quiet day at home with your immediate family, should be a peaceful, enjoyable time with as little stress as possible. We’re all about making things easier for moms, so What We Love Right Now: Tips for a Terrific (and hopefully less stressful!) Thanksgiving.

If you’re cooking for a large gathering we suggest a Potluck Thanksgiving. You can cook the bird and guests can provide the sides. This will be a TON of less work for you as the hostess. Now, if this is your first time cooking a turkey you may have some questions and hopefully we have some answers!

How long does it take a turkey to thaw?

In order to cook properly you turkey needs to be completely thawed.

    8-12 lbs – 2-3 days

    13-16 lbs – 3-4 days

    17-20 lbs – 4-5 days

    21-25 lbs – 5-6 days

How long should the turkey cook?

First, preheat your oven to 450°F. Rinse turkey; pat dry with paper towels. Prepare stuffing, if desired. Stuff body and neck cavities loosely with stuffing, if desired. Tie legs together with cotton string or tuck through skin flap, if provided. Tuck wings under turkey. Place turkey on meat rack in shallow roasting pan.  Insert ovenproof meat thermometer in thickest part of thigh not touching bone. You may want to brush your turkey with a little melted butter. Place turkey in oven. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F. Roast 18 to 20 minutes per pound for unstuffed turkey or 22 to 24 minutes per pound for stuffed turkey (you can brush with butter after 1 hour and then after 1-1/2 hours, if desired). Baste with pan juices every hour of roasting. (Total roasting time should be 4 to 5 hours.) If you notice the turkey is overbrowning, tent with foil. Cook until internal temperature reaches 180°F when tested with meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of thigh, not touching bone.

    Yummy Side Dishes

You may be the guest attending the Potluck or need a few sides to complete your small family gathering. What should you cook? You may have a great family recipe up your sleeve, but if you don’t here are two yummy side dishes sure to please everyone at the table.

    Tasty Twice Baked Potato Casserole

    What You’ll Need:

    • 10 large russet baking potatoes (about 7 pounds total)
    • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room temperature
    • 1 cup sour cream
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 2 teaspoons salt
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
    • 3/4 pound bacon, cooked until crisp and crumbled
    • 1/2 pound sharp white cheddar, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
    • 3/4 pound mild Cheddar, grated (3 cups)
    • 1/2 cup finely chopped green onions
    • 3 eggs, lightly beaten

    Fix it Fast:

    1. Scrub the potatoes well and rinse under cool running water. Pat dry with paper towels and prick the potatoes in several places with a fork. Place the potatoes in the oven and bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until tender. Remove from the oven and set aside on a wire rack until cool enough to handle.

    2. When the potatoes have cooled, cut each potato in half and, using a spoon or a melon baller, scoop the flesh out of the skins, leaving as little flesh as possible.

    3. Place the potato flesh in a large bowl and add 1 stick of the butter, the sour cream, heavy cream, salt, and pepper and mash until chunky-smooth.

    4. Add the bacon, cubed white Cheddar, half of the grated Cheddar, the green onions, and eggs and mix thoroughly.

    5. Butter a 9 by 13-inch casserole with the remaining tablespoon of butter and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F.

    6. Place the seasoned potato mixture in the prepared casserole and top with the remaining grated Cheddar.

    7. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until bubbly around the edges and heated through and the cheese on top is melted and lightly golden. Serve hot.

    Sauteed Green Beans and Mushrooms

Instead of Green Bean Casserole, try this yummy green bean variation.

    What You’ll Need:

    • Green Beans
    • Mushrooms
    • Salt and Pepper
    • Gralic and/or onion, optional
    • French Onion Crisps
    • Butter

    Fix it Fast:

    1. Blanche green beans in boiling water until cooked.

    2. Meanwhile, in a saute mushrooms (and garlic and onions, optional) in butter over medium-high heat, until golden.

    3. Add mushroom mix with drained green beans. Toss with salt and pepper.

    4. Place mixture in serving bowl and top with onion crisps.

How long can you keep turkey?

After you’ve all been stuffed with yummy food, you’ll probably have some left overs to deal with. You’ll want to pack up any leftovers within two hours of serving. Leftovers should only be kept in the fridge for 2 days, so anything you have mass quantities of should be frozen for safe keeping. Always defrost your frozen leftovers in the refrigerator.

    New Mom Must-Have Items

    November 17, 2010 by admin
Filed under First Trimester, Girl Talk, Kid Connection, Pregnancy

If you’re experiencing pregnancy for the first time, you’re probably going through a lot of “first” moments-first bouts of morning sickness, feeling those first kicks, and soon being a mom for the first time. As the time draws closer to your due date, you might be wondering if you are truly prepared for baby. There are millions of gadgets and baby gear items to chose from when you register for the first time and it can be very overwhelming. What are the things you can’t do without? We’ve got a list of must-have items to make sure you are ready for your bundle of joy!

    1. Boppy Pillow

If you are going to be breastfeeding, a Boppy Pillow is a must! It offers comfort for baby and support for you so your back isn’t aching for days. It comes in one standard size and a variety of patterned slip covers are available. Not to mention the Boppy makes a great little support seat for baby once he/she starts sitting up or a pillow you can use with baby during tummy time.

    2. Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair

There are oodles of high chairs on the market and all of them are equally bulky. If you are low on space or if you just want to save some room in general the Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair is the one for you. It attaches securely to your kitchen chair, the cover is removable for easy cleaning, and the tray is dishwasher safe. Need we say more?

    3. Graco Snug Ride Carseat

The Graco Sung Ride is a great, lightweight carseat. Again, it is offered in a variety of colors. It fits baby up to 32 lbs. so your child can stay rear-facing past their first birthday

    4. Born Free Bottles

There is are lots of major reason we love these bottles! They are easy to clean, don’t have too many parts, and really do help reduce gas.  They come in two sizes, 5 oz. and 9 oz., so you won’t be changing bottles sizes too much. Born Free also offers all kinds of nipple sizes so your little one will always get just the right flow.

    5. Snack Trap

    snack trap

While you baby won’t use these right away, we suggest registering for them anyway. The Snack Trap will save you from lots of spills once your little one can self feed. They are easy for little hands to handle and come with lids so snack won’t go stale.

    6. Jeep Universal Car Seat Carrier Stroller

This is a great stroller for the price ($69.99) and it is compatible with many carseats. Here is a list of seats that will work with this stroller:

    • Cosco Designer 22 Series
    • Cosco First Ride DX
    • Evenflo Discovery
    • Graco Safe Seat
    • Graco Snug Ride Series
    • Maxi-Cosi Mico
    • Peg Prego Primo Viaggio SIP
    • Safety 1st Designer 22
    • Safety 1st Starter

We love this stroller because it is an affordable option when compared to the “combo systems”. You can easily put this on your baby registry and, since it is at an affordable price point, someone will most likely purchase the item. Later, you can decide on a better lightweight stroller for when your little one is sitting up a bit better.

    7. Fisher Price Space Saver Swing and Seat – Luv U Zoo

This is a NEW baby gear item that just debuted this month. We love the pattern because it is great for boys and girls. Best of all this is a swing and seat all in one! As mentioned in the description on the Babies R Us website, “The Fisher-Price Luv U Zoo Space Saver Swing & Seat is the smallest size swing in the market offers two great formats in one space saving product. The swing includes a stationary positioner for easy and secure conversion to an infant seat. Additionally, convenient parent handles provide easy portability for mom. The product includes a machine washable pad, vibration and a removable toy bar. Music and sfx can be used in both modes and the swing offers five variable speeds. This swing comes with a sweet momma and baby rhino mobile and new Luv U Zoo styling in both the soft pad and the music.”

    What’s not to like?!

    8. HALO SleepSack Swaddle

We really like the HALO SleepSack Swaddle because it is another great two-in-one product. If want to swaddle your baby great but, if you don’t, you can simply detach the swaddle wrap feature and you will be left with just the zip-up sleepsack. You’ll be swaddling baby quite a bit and receiving blankets are great for swaddling but the HALO Velcros and is very secure, so baby will be less likely to unswaddle on their own.

All products can be found on or any Babies R Us location. All images courtesy of Babies R Us.

    Happy Birthday Sesame Street!

Today this great little show celebrates 41 years! No matter how young or old you are, this show and its characters have probably made their way into your home and heart somehow. Maybe you watched it as a child or you might have watched it with your own children. This show has had some great segments through the years. We love all the characters, especially the earlier ones that started the show: Big Bird, Grover, Snuffy. I think I still get a good feeling when I catch a glimpse of the show on TV. Who is your favorite Sesame Street character?

What We Love Right Now November 10, 2010: Giving Thanks

    November 10, 2010 by admin

This month brings one of the best holidays of the year, Thanksgiving. Not only do we all get to eat lots of yummy food, but it gives each of us a chance to reflect on our lives and give thanks for the many blessings we have been given. So, What We Love This Week is giving thanks for all the wonderful things in our life. On many social networks people are doing their “30 Days of Thanks” by updating their status each day with something they are most thankful for. With Veterans Day almost upon us, we’re reminded of those who have served and are serving to protect our freedom. Family, friends, and our health make the top of our thankful list too.  Job security, food on the table, the little comforts of life…the list could be endless.

Do you reflect on giving thanks daily? One neat idea to keep giving thanks year-round is keeping a running journal and chronicle one thing you are thankful for each day. Then at the end of the year you can look back and read about the wonderful things that happened in your life throughout the year.

What are you most thankful for this year?

    Oprah Inspired…Who’s Your “Teen Heartthrob”?

    November 4, 2010 by admin

Over the past few years I have become less and less of an Oprah Show watcher. However, her 25th year has really had some great shows so far and I am kind of getting back into the “Oprah Obsession”, if you will. One of her shows this week was about surprising her audience with Teen Heartthrobs. Grown women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s squealing like teenagers again over some of their favorite musicians…Jackie Jackson, Shaun Cassidy, and Peter Frampton, to name a few. As I watched I kind of thought these women were acting a bit silly, but then I remembered that I too had some favorite singers or bands that I was a little obsessed over.

One of my favorites was Michael Jackson. While he ended up having a rather mixed up kind of life, he was booming in the ’80s and nothing beat seeing him in his white suit on the cover of the Thriller album. And, of course, I had the doll.

Image courtesy of Amazon. com and the item is for sale, in case any fans are interested.

Another favorite was New Kids on the Block {who  by the way will be back on tour Spring 2011}. I had all the fan gear-shirts, pillowcases, buttons that were way to large, posters and all their cassettes.

What We Love Right Now November 3, 2010: UGG Boots~More Than Just a Trend

    November 3, 2010 by admin
Filed under Fashion Trends, Girl Talk, Shoes

With cooler weather finally setting in we’ve got staying warm on the brain. November reeks of winter promises: the start of the holidays, cold weather, and maybe even the chance of snow in some areas. We’ve dedicated this week’s What We Love Right Now to one of the biggest winter fashion trends of the past few years, the beloved UGG Boot!

To us these boots are more than just a stylish trend that took college girls by storm a few years back. UGGs offer women {and men and children :-) } and opportunity to be stylish without being uncomfortable. While many of us gals have boots upon boots, most of the boots probably are accompanied by a rather high heel. Don’t get us wrong we love those boots too, but what about the days when you want to look cute BUT also be comfortable? That’s where the UGG Boot comes in.

These boots are offered in a variety of styles and, really if you love them SO much like we do, you can start quite a collection! Some of our favorite styles are the Classic Tall, Bailey Button, and Classic Cardy. Those boots offer UGG’s more signature look. UGG also offer flats, sandals, and other boots that are not so “bulky” looking and still will give you a ton of style and comfort.

Now you may be asking, “What should I wear my UGG Boots with?”.

Try them with a pair of leggings…

    A pair of jeans…

Or try wearing some UGG boots or flats with these cute dresses. Go bare legged or try a pair of legging or tights under your frock…

    {From left to right: blue print dress, forver21, grey puff sleeve print,, cream sweater dress,}

To purchase a new pair of UGG boots or start your collection visit UGG Australia online or visit your favorite upscale department store.

Please note that we were not asked by UGG Australia to promote their products. It’s just What We Love Right Now!
