A Few April Fools Day Prank Ideas

March 31, 2012 by admin

Am I big on pranking? No, not really, but one day out of the year never hurt anyone ;-) . For a few years after I was married I always pranked my hubby on April Fools Day with phone calls like “I’ve been a fender bender in our brand new car” or “I’m pregnant again!”. Those two are probably more cruel than funny, but they never got old and qualified as a prank none-the-less! Then of course there is the age old “change the clocks” trick to make everyone else in the house think they are running late.

This year, I took to the web for some fun ideas on pranking those in your family on April Fools Day and liked these best from CafeMom. None of these pranks are too hardcore, but fun for a few laughs for sure!

Are you a big pranker? What’s the best prank you’ve played? Tell us about it!

I keep saying that I’m not a big fan of Walmart shopping, but I ran into a few deals there this week while shopping for diapers. Here’s one of them! These super cute Peanuts Bandages are only $0.88 for a box of 30 standard-size bandages. My kids LOVE the Peanuts Gang and will be so happy to cover up their boo-boos with these. At 88 cents a box, I have a feeling I will be back for many more of these bandages soon!

Filed under Family Destinations, Girl Talk

We’ve linked up with Destination Disney over at Heidi’s Head to share our list of Top 10 Disney Attractions!

So, here we go…

10. Pirates of the Caribbean: This is a no-brainer! Who doesn’t love pirates these days? Plus, when you really need a good break from walking around the park, this boat ride offers a great place to sit, relax, and enjoy some AC and pirate action!

9. Magic Carpets of Aladdin: Well, when you’re traveling with little ones (like me!) and the line for Dumbo is waaaaaay too long, then your next best bet will the be The Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Same kind of ride as Dumbo…Spinning carpets with up and down motion, BUT my kids especially love the golden camels! Watch out! You just might get sprayed!

8. Gran Fiesta Tour: Nestled in the back of the San Angel Inn in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion, this is probably not a top pick for most Disney goers. Let me say though, if you have small children, this is the ride for you! Our kids LOVE this silly little boat ride featuring Donald Duck. Best of all, there is hardly EVER a line! We say get your laughs in and take the time to enjoy the Gran Fiesta Tour!

7. Studio Backlot Tour: This is a great attraction at Hollywood Studios. Get a first look at how special effects work and also learn a little more about the history of Disney!

IMG_2599 (800x599)

6. It’s a Small World: One word: Classic! It’s a must-do Fantasyland attraction no matter how young or old you may be!

5. Beauty and the Beast Live! On Stage: Sit back, relax, and enjoy this wonderful production put on at Hollywood Studios. Really and truly, this is a first rate show and a must see for all princess lovers!

IMG_2607 (800x600)

4. Splash Mountain: Get a little wet and have a little fun on this log ride based on Disney’s film, Song of the South. Our kids love this ride and who doesn’t love the big drop into the Briar Patch?!

3. The Festival of the Lion King: Get in line early to see one of the showings of this live production at Animal Kingdom. Audience participation, live stunts, and good music make this attraction one of our very top picks! You definitely don’t want to miss this!

IMG_2411 (800x600)

2. Kilimanjaro Safari: A favorite for many, this one comes in second, but a close first really! Get aboard a safari jeep and take an adventure through the African safari. See some beautiful animals up close and get some great pictures for your scrapbooks!

IMG_2376 (800x600)

1. Toy Story Mania: Coming in at #1 for us is the very popular Toy Storia Mania at Hollywood Studios. Why? Well, it is far more fun that Buzz’s Space Ranger Spin (for many reasons but one being that the laser doesn’t ever seem to work correctly for me–I aim, but no points are ever credited)! You can shoot out all kind of targets in 3D on Toy Story Mania! Another fun feature of this attraction is the talking Mr. Potato Head. You’ll love seeing him as you walk through the stand-by line!

What We Love Right Now March 21, 2012: Chicken Lovers Garlic N Cheddar Chicken

March 21, 2012 by admin
Filed under Girl Talk, Meals In Minutes

We always like trying new recipes, but especially easy, delicious, no-hassle recipes. If you love chicken, then you’re gonna love this recipe! Serve it with rolls, salad, and a veggie (we love steamed broccoli or a veggie medley) and you’ve got yourself a meal ready in just minutes!

Chicken Lovers Garlic N Cheddar Chicken

What You Need

1/2 cup butter

4 cloves of garlic, minced (when we’re in a hurry we use the preminced garlic in a jar. you can find this in most grocery produce departments)

3/4 dried bread crumbs (don’t have on hand? we use crushed ritz crackers as a substitute)

1/2 cup Parmesean cheese

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar

1/4 teaspoon dry oregano

1/4 teaspoon parsely flakes

1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

1/8 teaspspoon salt

8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts–pounded

Fix it Fast

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. In a small saucepan melt butter and cook garlic.

3. In a bowl mix bread crumbs, cheeses, and all spices.

4. Dip chicken in butter mix to coat, then dip in bread crumb mixture. Place chicken on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

5. Drizzle remaining butter on top and then top with any remaining bread crumb mix.

6. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until juices run clear.

When we made this dish we used only 3 large chicken breasts (what you typically get in one pack) and halved the recipe. It was scrumptious!

Disney Dining: Our Top Picks for Dining at Downtown Disney

March 19, 2012 by admin

If you are heading to Walt Disney World and are using the Disney Dining Plan you may not consider Downtown Disney as a dining option. Think again! There are several restaurants at Downtown Disney that fall under the dining plan for both counter service and table service. We are going to share with you our top picks for dining at Downtown Disney (DTD).

Best Counter Service Restaurant: Wolfgang Puck Express

wolfgangpuckexpress_sharpmomsThis, without a doubt,  goes to Wolfgang Puck Express. Please do not confuse this with the Wolfgang Puck Cafe (a table service restaurant also located at DTD). The Wolfgang Puck Express offers the same great flavors as the cafe, but for only ONE counter service credit per person. The menu is quite good and this is definitely the place to get the most food for your credit. If you are paying out of pocket this is a great option too as the portions at Express are huge! We last dined here during our winter trip to Disney and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I got the chicken ceasar salad, brushetta, brownie, and beverage (all under the dining plan). Out of pocket the salad is around $15, and that’s the ballpark price for most entrees here. Like we mentioned, the portions are enough to feed more than one person. So, although a little pricey for counter service, you do get a lot of food for the money. Not to mention all entrees are prepared with the same Wolfgang Puck gourmet style as if you ordered from the Cafe. We give Wolfgang Puck Express two thumbs up! It’s a must try on your next trip, especially if you have counter service credits to use.

Best Table Service Restaurant: Fulton’s Crab House

fultons_sharpmomsIf you’re looking for a fine dining experience while at Disney then try Fulton’s Crab House. This restaurant is set up in a three-tiered river boat! It offers a great atmosphere, awesome views, and delicious food! All seafood is flown in daily and super fresh–seafood lover rejoice! Fulton’s is open for lunch and dinner, but we suggest dining here for dinner so you can load up on a great meal and not have to risk walking all over the parks with such a full tummy. If you don’t like seafood there are a few other options on the menu so don’t shy away from this great eatery. However, we do suggest Fulton’s for the avid seafood fans. The Alaskan King Crab Legs are a diners favorite, but also consider Fulton’s Seafood Trio or the Shrimp and Lobster Ravioli. If you’re into wine Fulton’s has a great list with over 50 selections. Some of our friends dined here on their last Disney vacation and claimed Fulton’s was their best meal of the week. If you’re paying out of pocket be prepared to pony-up as Fulton’s is not cheap. If you’re on Disney’s Dining Plan then save your credits; Fulton’s Crab House is signature dining experience and uses TWO table service credits per person. Fulton’s is a favorite among Disney goers so we do suggest making dining reservations in advance.

Best Family Oriented Restaurant: T-Rex A Prehistoric Family Adventure

trexcafe_sharpmomsWe vote the T-Rex Cafe as the best place to dine for family fun. This restaurant is covered under the dining as a table service restaurant and uses ONE table service credit per person. If you have children of varying ages in your group this restaurant is must-do! Tired of character meals? Again, T-Rex Cafe is a must-do! While dining you’ll be surrounded by life-size, moving dinosaurs. One favorite is the large octopus over the main bar area–and look out–it really does move! So characters in the traditional sense won’t be found here, but you’ll still be entertained with all the dino action. Keep in mind your very young children may be a little timid to eat with life-size dinosaurs, so think about that before dining her. As far as the menu goes, T-Rex Cafe is most famous for its Layers of the Earth Lasagna, Prehistoric Pizzas, and the Eruption (a to-die-for dessert). The children’s menu carries all the staples as well. Your family will definitely enjoy their time here and also get a great meal in the process. It’s a pretty popular restaurant so be sure to snag advanced dining reservations. Walk-ups risk waiting up to an hour and half on busy days.

**These are the opinions of SharpMoms. SharpMoms was not paid by Disney to endorse these restaurants.**

A Hidden Vacation Treasure: Edisto Beach, South Carolina

March 16, 2012 by admin
Filed under Family Destinations, Girl Talk, Travel

IMG_0196 (800x588)Are you in the process of planning a spring or summer vacation? When many of us think about going to the beach for a getaway we automatically think of Florida, especially if you plan on traveling within the U.S. However, if you read along with us you’ll see that there is a hidden beach treasure just off the coast of the Carolinas. This great, family-oriented vacation spot is Edisto Beach, SC. Have you been there before? Many have not. In fact many people have never even heard of this beautiful island. We suggest you give it a try for your next beach vacation and here’s why:

Edisto Beach is a quaint little beach town filled with many vacation rentals-all beach homes and condos. Looking for hotel? You won’t find one on Edisto Island. This beach has remained virtually noncommercial. It’s very refreshing to visit a beach town and not find one big building. Now, if you’re looking for great food you’ll definitely find some while you’re visiting. This little beach has some great restaurants like Sea Cow, Dock Side, and The Old Post Office. The food is so good here that the town just held a food festival with events like oyster roasts, cook-offs, and charity dinners. You won’t go back home hungry!

Alright, so in a town that has IMG_1384 (600x800)no big attractions you might be thinking you’ll grow tired of sunning on the sandy beaches. Think again! The Edisto Beach State park is right on the island and a great place to visit or camp. The park offers RV sites as well as cabins. There is also the Edisto Island Serpentarium, a perfect place to take kids who love reptiles and amphibians. Like fishing? There are several boat charter and touring companies on the island ready to take you on a great adventure! Visit Botany Bay or take a small boat out to Shell Island, a treasure trove of beautiful shells. Does your husband like to golf? Edisto just happens to be home to a wonderful course.

Still not sold? Another reason we love this easy-going beach town is simple. Edisto Beach is very close to a great southern city, Charleston, SC. We day trip to Charleston at least once a vacation when we travel to Edisto Beach. There is so much to do there! Great shopping, restaurants, and an aquarium and children’s museum (the kids will love it)!

We hope you’ll consider Edisto Beach as your family vacation. You will not find another beach like this! The whole town is so family oriented. You will really be “getting away from it all” when you visit!

Deal Alert! $5 in Movie Cash To See the The Lorax with Purchase of $5 DVD from Wal-Mart

March 14, 2012 by admin

IMAG0330I’ll admit it: I’m not the biggest fan of Wal-Mart shopping. That place just overwhelms me, but every now and then I make my way there and find a deal or two. This week while making a quick trip for some Easter basket goodies (yep, already getting that squared away) I found a few shelves of $5 DVDs. Keep in mind, these DVDs are older titles. Lots of unpopular Barbie movies, Land Before Time flicks, and some other early 90’s hits. I wasn’t sold on any of them, but then I noticed a sticker on the front of most of the $5 DVDs that was good for $5 free “movie cash” which is good to see The Lorax.

I went with a Land Before Time movie since my kids love dinos and plan on using it as an Easter basket treat. Essentially the movie was free since we are planning to see The Lorax this weekend and can use the $5 in free movie cash that came with the purchase. So, if you haven’t seen The Lorax, or if you’re planning on going to see it more than once, head to your local Wal-Mart and grab a $5 DVD and earn some movie cash!

What We Love Right Now March 14, 2012: Meatless Meals

March 14, 2012 by admin
Filed under Girl Talk, Meals In Minutes

When you think meatless anything you may automatically imagine vegetarians, vegans, and yucky food meant for rabbits, but meatless meals can be a wonderful, scrumptious, healthy choice to add into your weekly meal planner. Really, meatless meals are becoming a new sensation. Here are a few of our favorite meatless meals!

Classic Black Beans and Rice

Many don’t like the thought of a very “beanie” meal, but black beans and rice is full of flavor and very easy on your budget. This will definitely fill up those tummies and taste good too!

What You’ll Need:

4 teaspoons olive oil

1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped (some folks like sliced)
1 onion, finely chopped
5-6 cloves garlic, minced
2 (16-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
4-5 cups cooked white rice (we like taking easy street and using Minute Rice)

Fix it Fast:

1. In a large sauce pan heat oil and sautee onions, green pepper, and garlic. Be sure to stir occasionally so the veggies don’t stick. Simmer until veggies are tender.

2. Stir in the beans, tomatoes, chicken broth, thyme, oregano and water. Bring to a boil.

3. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 45 minutes until the sauce thickens.

4. Stir in cilantro, if desired. Serve over hot rice and enjoy!

Southwest Mac and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese are many kids favorites, but here’ a version with a little kick!

What You’ll Need:

8oz. package of elbow maccaroni
1 cup salsa
1 1/2 cups milk
1 15 0z can cream-style corn
one can mexi-kernal corn with red and green peppers (Green Giant makes a corn variety similar to this)
8 oz cheddar cheese, cubed

Fix it Fast:

  1. Mix all ingredients except cheese in 12-inch nonstick skillet. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally; reduce heat.
  2. Cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until macaroni is tender.
  3. Stir in cheese until melted and serve!

This meal goes great with chips and salsa or cornbread!

Tortellini Primavera

Alright folks, it doesn’t get any easier (or yummier) than this recipe! Frozen vs. fresh veggies makes this a quick meal to prepare any night of the week!

What You’ll Need:

1 bag frozen cheese tortellini
1 can chicken broth
1 small bag frozen veggie medley (broccoli, corn, peas, carrots)
1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Grated Parmesan cheese, to top meal

Fix it Fast:

1. In a large pan heat oil. Then sautee garlic. In a separate pot, cook tortellini according to package.

2. Add chicken broth to pan. Bring to boil.

3. Stir in Mozzarella cheese.

4. Add frozen veggies to the pan (be sure mixture is still boiling) and cook for 5-10 minutes until the vegetable are thawed.

5. Add tortellni to mixture, top with Parmesan cheese, and serve!

If you broth does not thicken add a pinch of cornstarch or flour before adding cheese. Serve with garlic bread and salad.

DisneyJr.Com’s Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Lucky You Game

March 13, 2012 by admin
Filed under Girl Talk, Kid Connection

I don’t know about your children, but mine love any chance to play on the computer and a smartphone. I guess it’s a techie world these days, so I can’t really blame them! When we play online, Disney Jr. isn’t usually a page we visit, but we decided to over the weekend and found a super fun and cute game called “Lucky You”.

This game is St. Patty’s Day themed and made so that two people can play against each other. There is a parent option for playing with an adult or another option for playing with a peer. You can choose which character you’d like to be, then you “spin” the wheel and answer questions that boost counting, pattern making, and listening skills. If you answer correctly, you move 3 spaces; If you miss, you get another turn to answer again. If your character lands on a lucky clover you’ll receive a bonus and get to move ahead several spaces. Bottom line: My kids loved this game! We hope yours will too! Play it here at DisneyJr.com.
