What We Love Right Now April 6, 2011: Fresh Decorating Ideas for Spring

Better Homes and Garden has some really wonderful ideas for decorating this spring. We picked a few of our favorites, plus we’ve got some other great finds from our favorite retailers to spruce up your spaces in no time!

1. We really like this pink and green entryway. The green color palette is so springy and the pink gives just the right pop of color. All the white furniture is so crisp. The woven baskets and natural materials also add a nice warm touch. What a great ‘welcome to our house’ for your guests!

What We Love Right Now November 24, 2010: Wish Lists

With the holidays drawing near, it is time to join in the hustle and bustle and begin shopping for others. This can be a daunting task, especially if you’re shopping for the person who has everything. What we love right now are wish lists. They can really be so helpful when others are trying to shop for you or when you are trying to shop for others. If you haven’t created a wish list before, it is very similar to a registry you would create for your wedding or new baby. Many stores such as Toys R Us, Target, and Pottery Barn allow you to create wish lists for Christmas, Birthdays, and Hanukkah. Your loved ones can then shop the list you’ve created for yourself or your children. What We Love Right Now November 3, 2010: UGG Boots~More Than Just a Trend

With cooler weather finally setting in we’ve got staying warm on the brain. November reeks of winter promises: the start of the holidays, cold weather, and maybe even the chance of snow in some areas. We’ve dedicated this week’s What We Love Right Now to one of the biggest winter fashion trends of the past few years, the beloved UGG Boot!

To us these boots are more than just a stylish trend that took college girls by storm a few years back. UGGs offer women {and men and children } and opportunity to be stylish without being uncomfortable. While many of us gals have boots upon boots, most of the boots probably are accompanied by a rather high heel. Don’t get us wrong we love those boots too, but what about the days when you want to look cute BUT also be comfortable? That’s where the UGG Boot comes in.

What We Love Right Now October 20, 2010: Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and if you’ve been following our facebook fan page you know that I have been “thinking pink” and posting pictures of businesses that are supporting this cause. Many moons ago I joined a wonderful sorority and its philanthropy was and still is spreading the word of breast cancer awareness. This is when fighting this disease really began to hold a special place in my heart.

Looking back now as I am older and wiser I realize even more how important early detection is-it can save lives! From celebrities like Christina Applegate, to your mom, aunt, sister, or grandmother, breast cancer can affect everyone from the young to the old. It knows no limits and does not discriminate based on age. Women in their 20s are finding they have breast cancer {very scary}.

Here are a few tips for early detection:

Of course, if you are of age, you should be getting your yearly mammogram. This is usually around the age of 40, but might be recommended at an earlier age if you have a history of breast cancer in your family.

Beginning in your 20s and 30s your OB will probably do a clinical breast exam at your yearly appointment.

And as early as in your 20s you should be doing a self breast exam about once a month. Doing one on a regular basis will help you better recognize when and if you feel an abnormal lump.

As years have passed more and more ways to help support breast cancer research have become available. One of the biggies is participating in your local Race for the Cure. In college our sorority participated every year, running the race and helping the survivors tent. Races have been taking place all month long, but there are still two weekends left in October. Here at SharpMoms Fall and cooler weather has been on the brain and it seems to have become a weather reality-finally! Is this food still good?

When food passes the expiration date, you are probably left wondering if you should take the risk and keep the item or pitch it? Here are few things you might have in your kitchen that get a pass to stay or should head straight to the trash can.

MILK-It’s good in your fridge at least one week past the expiration date. You can always give the jug the ole sniff test to be sure.

EGGS-Eggs stay fresh 3 to 5 weeks after the purchase. To ensure extra freshness be sure to keep the eggs in the body of the fridge and not on a shelf door.

BANANAS-You can store this fruit for up to five days in your refridgerator. The skin may turn brown, but when peeled the fruit is still fresh.

BREAD-It’s best stored on the counter for up to week after purchase. Avoid putting your grains in the fridge because they will go stale faster.

STEAKS & GROUND BEEF-If they have turned brown but have been in the fridge they are safe to cook and eat up to five days after thawing. Anything past five days is questionable and should probably be disgarded.
